This is an oil painting of a bull elk in the Black Sage Pass area with Tomichi Dome in the background. I have hunted elk in this area since 1986 after I moved from Oklahoma to Gunnison. Tomichi Dome is still listed as an active volcano and is located about twenty miles east of Gunnison. The historical Waunita Hot Springs Resort is located at the base of Tomichi Dome. The hot springs and the surrounding valley floor were considered sacred ground by the Indian Tribes that once lived in Colorado and traveled to the hot springs to bathe in them for healing.
